Founded by a passionate group of balloonists, we aim to share this magical sport with everyone, from seasoned balloonists to curious newcomers.
Our mission is to promote safe and enjoyable ballooning, foster learning and camaraderie among members, and celebrate the breathtaking beauty of our region from the skies. We organise a range of events throughout the year, including club days, club nights, training workshops and our junior balloonist’s program which attracts balloonists from near and far.

The Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club (WHABC) has a rich history that dates back over 30 years ago. It began in April 1993 with a ‘germ of an idea began rolling to reality after a successful balloon event’ as our first presidential report puts it. This small group of passionate balloonists who were captivated by the thrill and beauty of hot air ballooning. Formed the WHABC Driven by a shared vision, they formed the club to create a community where everyone could come together to share their love for this unique sport.
From those humble beginnings, the club has grown significantly over the decades. We have expanded our membership, shared ballooning with 1000’s of people, flown our 5 club balloons and enhanced our range of activities and events. One of our proudest achievements is the establishment of the Waikato Balloon Festival, which has grown beyond the club into Balloons Over Waikato which is a highlight of the region’s calendar and a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors.
Throughout the years, our club has remained dedicated to promoting safe and enjoyable ballooning experiences, fostering learning and camaraderie among members, and celebrating the breathtaking beauty of the Waikato region from the skies. Today, we continue to honor the spirit and vision of our founders, inviting new generations to experience the magic of hot air ballooning with us.
