Hot air ballooning is a true team sport – every flight depends on the teamwork between a pilot and their crew. At the Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club, we’re always welcoming new members who want to experience the fun, challenge, and magic of ballooning. Whether you’re keen to crew, curious about becoming a pilot, or just looking to be part of a unique and friendly community, there’s a place here for you.
Most balloon teams are made up of 2 to 5 people, including the pilot. Smaller balloons need just a couple of crew members, while larger balloons may need more hands on deck. Every crew member plays an essential role—from setup to pack-down—and no flight can happen without them.
As a crew member, you’ll help with:
Pre-flight setup: Unpacking the balloon, assisting with inflation, and getting everything ready for takeoff.
Chasing and navigation: Following the balloon’s flight path in the chase vehicle, with the aim to be close to the landing location.
Post-flight pack-down: Assisting with deflation, repacking the balloon, and putting it all back in the trailer ready for the next adventure!
No experience is necessary – just bring:
A willingness to learn and work as part of a team
Basic physical fitness (simple lifting and walking across fields)
Good, sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing
A sense of adventure and an early alarm – most flights happen at dawn!
A driver’s license is a bonus but not required
Ballooning is a hobby for most of our members, so flights typically happen on weekends and public holidays, weather permitting. Several of our members own their own balloons, and club members often crew for each other during recreational flights or events. It’s a great way to be part of something fun and rewarding – while learning loads along the way.
Becoming a member of the Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club is about more than just ballooning—it’s about community. Whether you’re passionate about aviation, curious about crewing, or just want to be part of something unique and exciting, our club offers plenty of ways to connect, learn, and take part.
If you’re dreaming of flying a balloon yourself, it all starts with crewing. Pilots are leaders who are responsible not just for flight, but for the safety, training, and coordination of their team. That’s why most pilots spend years crewing first, learning every aspect of ballooning—from setup and flight planning to weather, navigation, and teamwork.
By being a regular crew member, you’ll build up the experience and insight needed to one day step into the pilot’s seat with confidence.
